Ok dear students
now let’s move on to the next part
the intercultural business etiquette
In this part
In this part
we are going to talk about
the etiquettes that
you should pay much more
attention to while communicating
with business partners
They are Table manners
Dress code
Personal titles
Punctuality
and Gift giving
Ok the first
Table manners
When eating with South Africans
wash your hands
before and after meals
Traditionally
eat with your right hand
out of your plate
Never use your left
hand unless you
are obviously eating something
that requires both hands
Nowadays
since many of the
Western dinner manners
are accepted
modern urban South Africa
has been westernized
and dine with spoon and knife
If a communal
bowl is offered to you
only eat from the part
of the communal
plate or bowl that is
directly in front of you
Start eating or drinking
after the oldest person
at the table has served
Remember
Islam forbids the use of pork
and most Muslims need to
prepare halal meat
for example
meat that is slaughtered
according to Islamic regulations
Next Dress code
The formal business
dress code for men is a suit
or rather pants
tie and blazer
You should keep your outfits
conservative but not too stylish
conservative but not too stylish
For women
business suits
formal skirts or pants
and blouses are all acceptable
Formal dresses are also an option
Avoid wearing clothes
that are too tight or exposed
In smaller companies
the dress code is more casual
but shorts and flip-flops
are still not accepted
as business attire in South Africa
Since summer in South Africa
tends to be hot
men may wear short-sleeved
or long-sleeved shirts
sometimes without a suit jacket
If not in a formal
business meeting
the tie tends to come off
Personal Titles
Generally
South Africans do not
use titles when addressing their associates
However
some honorary doctors
may wish to be addressed in this way
When addressing female business
partners whose marital
status are unknown
it would be better
to avoid using “Miss”
as it may cause resentment
in the other person
You should only start calling
each other by
their first names
after being invited
otherwise you risk
giving a bad impression
Punctuality
Throughout South African business life
punctuality is highly
appreciated when attending a meeting
while black people
are more flexible in their timing
Still
you should know
that in many companies
and all of the government
buildings visitors are required to
sign in and out
and also pass-through security checks
Keep this in mind
when going to meetings
so that you can actually be on time
Also
organize traffic
well in advance to avoid being late
Gift Giving
While gift exchanges during business
meetings are not a typical
custom in South Africa
they are not unheard of either
These gifts are not considered a bribe
and should be accepted
otherwise
the giver may feel offended
Gifts are generally
opened as they are received
After you have developed
a business relationship
a small yet meaningful gif
would be significantly
appreciated for your business partners
And personalized gifts are the best
for example
a high-quality pen
desk accessory
Ok so much for the culture etiquette
