To communicate successfully with people from another culture
the most important thing is to know what they are thinking
Now
let’s move on to the most important part of intercultural knowledge
about Singapore’s psychology

In this part
we are going to talk about three key aspects
fear of losing money
concept of Face
and diversified cultural groups
First
fear of losing money
The Singaporean concept of “kiasu”
which literally means “fear of losing money”
is often used to describe the social attitudes of Singaporeans
This concept
refers to the fact that Singaporeans always want the best for themselves
always want to be the best
come first and never lose
The word is so widely used by Singaporeans
that it has been incorporated into the English vocabulary of Singaporeans
“Kiasu” has both positive and negative connotations
some say it keeps standards high
while others say it leads to a lusterless society
The concept of “Kiasu” reflects the importance
Singaporeans place on competitiveness and a strong work ethics
Second
the concept of face
An important value in Singaporean culture is to preserve and maintain “face”
To avoid losing face
Singaporeans control their behaviour
and emotions in public without openly confronting or criticising others
and adopt indirect communication
Losing face can have a negative impact on one’s family
and other social groups to which one belongs
as well as one’s reputation, credibility and authority
Third
diversified cultural groups
With its ethnic Chinese
Malay and Indian communities and migrant workers
Singapore values the diversity of its people
and emphasizes the importance of accepting differences
Singaporean society accepts religious and racial differences
and customs and traditions are respected
Despite the separation between some groups
