To communicate successfully with
people from another culture
the most important thing is to know
what they are thinking
Now, let’s move on to one of
the most essential parts
within the intercultural framework – the cultural identity
and its core value
In this part
we are going to talk about three Key Cultural Concepts in India
Hinduism and the traditional caste system
Fatalism, and Collectivism.
First, Hinduism and the traditional caste system
In India
religion is a way of life and you are obliged to respect it in
order to maintain successful business relationships
with your Indian business contacts
Although the traditional caste system
a direct outgrowth of Hinduism
has been eliminated
its social hierarchical attitudes remain
and these two aspects of Indian culture, i.e
Hinduism and the traditional caste system
still influence the structure of business conducting in India today
We will continue to talk about this in Business Practice
Structure and hierarchy in Indian companies
Second, Fatalism
The concept of fatalism is derived from one of the most
characteristic features of Indian culture - spirituality
The idea of karma and the idea that everything happens
for a reason is still important in the decision-making
process of many Indians
It also affects the Indian perception of time
so business negotiations between you and your Indian business
partners can take longer and are never rushed
Third Collectivism
India’s strong sense of community
and group orientation means that people are
more acceptable of the hierarchical setup
In India
there is a distinct lack of privacy
a smaller concept of personal space
and generations of people often live together under one roof
For successfully conducting business with Indians,
you need to place greater emphasis on interpersonal interaction
conflict avoidance and more indirect communication methods
