Now let’s move on to the fun part
The business etiquette
In this part we are going to talk about the following etiquettes
that you should pay strong attention to
while communicating with Kazakh businesspeople
They are
Greeting manners
Table manners
Business dress code
and Communication.
Greeting manners
A handshake is a common greeting
in the business environment of Kazakhstan
You could give your Kazakh business partner
a gentle handshake with both hands
If you want to initiate a handshake as a business woman
between you and a male Kazakh business partner
you should extend your hand
yet they may not accept your handshake
since in Kazakhstan men do not usually shake hands
with women due to Muslim religious consideration
Be sure to maintain eye contact when greeting
When the meeting is over
shake hands before you leave
If you meet your acquainted Kazakh business partners
at workplace several times on the same day
you are not obliged to shake hands with them each time
except the first time you meet for the day
Also the way your Kazakh business partners
greet you can be seen as a reflection
of their status in the company
since the formality of greetings in Kazakhstan replicate
the position a man or woman has in society
Often the less senior person will first extend both
of their hands to show respect and admiration
Table manners
Since meals are such an important factor in business
which open the door to other more formal meetings
with your potential Kazakh business partners
it would always be wise to accept such invitations
also to avoid causing offence
If you are invited to a Kazakh meal
make sure to leave yourself plenty of time
as meals like this are not to be rushed but intended
to mingle with people
In Kazakhstan food culture is one of the essential parts
in Kazakhs’ social as well as business life
People may eat other kinds of meat
such as horse meat
horse meat is a staple of the Kazakh diet
Make sure you respect their eating habit and food choice
when dining with your Kazakh business partners
Moreover many foods in Kazakhstan have symbolic meanings
especially special foods that are served to honour someone
For example in Kazakhstan
a sheep or goat is typically slaughtered
for a feast in honour of a special guest
and the head of the sheep is the most honoured part
In addition
if you are served meat from different parts
of the sheep head
you might be appreciated for different aspects
from your host
for instance the tongue indicates you are a good communicator
the ear part indicates you are a good listener
Apart from expecting to be served food by your host
once you finish eating
leave some food on your plate
as a clean plate will be taken to mean
that you are not full yet
don’t take food with your left hand
due to Muslim teachings
Also remember to take a small gift for your Kazakh host
which would be well received
Cakes or sweet pastries are a good choice to bring in
Business dress code
When doing business with your Kazakh business partners
men are usually expected to wear regular suits
or ties and jackets on formal occasions
For women a stylish yet regular business suit
or dress and top is appropriate
Shoes are very important in Kazakh business environment
When meeting with your Kazakh business partners
men tend to wear formal business shoes with pointy
vibrant look and women
on the other hand
wear high heels
which are usually stilettos
What’s more
it is always the best
to make sure your shoes are clean and polished
which will surely impress your Kazakh business partners
Communication
In Kazakhstan
maintaining relations and not losing face
are considered very important
which resemble part of the business cultural values
in some Southeast Asian countries
such as Thailand
Singapore Malaysia and other Asian countries
As a result your Kazakh business partners
in order to convey their messages
in a sensitive and diplomatic manner
will carefully craft what they say
They tend to speak in a roundabout tact
rather than a linear tact
They tend to respond to gentle probing rather
than direct questioning
However at the same time
many Kazakhs may seem to act inexplicably aggressive
and raise their voice while making their point
You will wish to strike back at some point
but do so with watchful cautions
as there’s a fine line between defending yourself
and showing up excessively forceful
