The Civil War is the central event

Part 2 Emancipation Proclamation

In 1863, Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation,

a presidential proclamation and executive order.

That on the first day of January,

in the year of our Lord

one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three,

all persons held as slaves within any State

Northern victory in the war preserved the United States
