Function

The acknowledgment is a formal statement

that recognizes individuals and institutions

that contributed to the work being reported

It is a great opportunity to formally thank

all of those who have helped you

to show respect and politeness to those

who have supported you

with the completion of the study

and the presentation

It is significant to write acknowledgment

because it makes people feel good

who have participated in your study and

you accredit them for their efforts

get it spelled correctly

acknowledgement and acknowledgment appear throughout

the English-speaking world

but acknowledgment without the middle e

is preferred

in the American and Canadian English

while acknowledgement is preferred

outside North America

These preferences extend to the plural forms

acknowledgements and acknowledgments

An acknowledgment section might

initially seem like the simplest part

But we often feel stumped

once we reach this part

Let's move on for the tipes

on how to acknowledge

Where to place the acknowledgment slide

If you are like most scientists

chances are that you will place the acknowledgment slide

at the end of your presentation

If you were to place it at the end

as in the scrolling credits of any movie

as in the scrolling credits of any movie

chances are the audience will have switched

or left the room by the time the credits roll

or chances are you will go over time

in your presentation and will have to skip

Whichever way you look at it

the perspective is bleak

But if you watch one of

the Hollywood award events

chances are you will hear the acknowledgements

at the very beginning of the acceptance speech

Because people you recognize as being

part of your success are in the room

and if you fail to mention them

as in “and others too many to mention”

chances are that the ones who are in the

“too many” category will be offended

Either logos and names on the title slide

tend to stay on the screen for a while

at the beginning of the talk

or briefly using photos

on the slide that follows the title slide

Acknowledgment can be traditionally

placed in the front

as well as appears in the back

Alternatively

some authors choose to place the acknowledgment

either before or after the table of contents

The International Committee

of Medical Journal Editors

describes several roles

that merit acknowledgment

rather than authorship

They are acquisition of funding

general supervision of a research group

or general administrative support

and writing assistance

technical editing

language editing

and proofreading

Four categories of contributions

can be identified

in the acknowledgment

they are financial

instrumental /technical

conceptual and editorial

One financial

mention the funds or institutes that

provided financial aids to your project

Two instrumental or technical

acknowledge those who provided access to tools

technologies

facilities

and also furnishing technical expertise

such as statistical analysis

data or computational resources

express your thanks to those help you

with source of inspiration

idea generation

critical insight

intellectual guidance

assistance of referees etc

give thanks to anyone who helped with the writing

or language of the presentation

Now let's look at some frequently used phrases

in acknowledgment

You spell the magic by your words

when you write acknowledgment

Therefore you have to be very choosy

while selecting the phrases

Use appealing and elegant phrases

to show your thankful expression

Remember

the acknowledgment section

is not a trivial component

By acknowledging all help received

with your research

you are demonstrating your integrity

as a researcher
