Academic writing at the phrase level
requires finding the most
precise word available
for expressing a concept or action
Notice how in Example 15
the meaning of the verb has
seems to change depending on the subject of the verb

The patient has surgery this afternoon
The doctor has surgery this afternoon
This ambiguity
(more than one meaning)
should be resolved
by choosing a more precise verb
Example 16
The patient undergoes surgery this afternoon
The doctor performs surgery this afternoon
Nouns also exist on a continuum
from more general to more specific
And academic writing
usually requires the noun
that expresses the concept
as specifically as possible
If a noun can be used to express
different but similar concepts
it is probably a category term
and not very precise

The level of medication in the bottle was 4ml
The level of medication in the bottle
was 4ml/liter of saline
The medication level of the bottle was 4ml
Thus usually the more precise noun
should be used

The amount of medication in the bottle was 4ml
The concentration of medication in the bottle
was 4ml/liter of saline
The medication content of the bottle was 4ml
The more general term can be used
if two of the more precise concepts
are being expressed in the same sentence

exceeded the allowable standards
