In Chapter 5
we are going to focus on
Academic Style at the Paragraph Level
A paragraph generally
expresses a controlling idea
by a group of sentences
The length of a paragraph varies
It can be as short as one sentence
or as long as hundreds of words to
develop a complex thought
depending on its position
and role in the whole piece of writing
When you see an indented space
or a line skipped
you will know a new paragraph begins
The writer is sending a signal
to the readers that after a quick rest
for both the eyes and brains
a change from the previous text
is taking place
and will be illustrated in the following words
A well-written paragraph in academic writing
should have a clear topic and message
Particularly in SCI papers
a paragraph develops a controlling idea
which is normally expressed
in a clear topic sentence
and then informs or persuades
the readers by the detailed
sentences to further explain the message
To best organize the content
a series of guiding principles
of good paragraph structure covered in today’s lesson
will be quite helpful especially
when you are working on the SCI medical writings
After learning this lesson
you should be able to write a paragraph
which is intact as a whole
and at the same time perfectly fits
into the complete essay
to develop and support the thesis statement
