Hello everyone I am Hua Yao from Capital Medical university
Today we are going to talk about tables
In this lecture
we are going to work on the case analysis
Let’s look at the first one
From New England Journal of Medicine
The paper is Five-Year Outcomes after Off-Pump
or On-Pump Coronary-Artery Bypass Grafting
From this table we can see the following features
the table is numbered and followed by a period
the title “Outcomes at 5 years” goes above the Table
the title is brief and clear
Each type of information has its own column
and column heading
lines of demarcation are used to set title column headings
data and footnotes apart from one another
the column heading is subdivided into two or more categories
and subheadings for each category are used
the column headings are brief in the table
short terms or abbreviations in the column headings
and subheadings are used
a series of superscript symbols are used
to indicate that further explanations are provided
in the footnotes
In the footnotes
the writer provides further explanations
to clarify the outcome details in the table
the definition of abbreviations
are also provided after each explanation
each explanation has separate lines
Now let’s look at another example
It is from Lancet the paper is
Effect of apalutamide on health-related quality of life in patients
with non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer
an analysis of the SPARTAN randomised
placebo-controlled phase 3 trial
From this table we can see the following features
a colon is used after "Table 3"
the title “Group mean
FACT-P total
FACT-G total and FACT-P subscale scores in patients
with symptomatic progressive disease” was placed
at the bottom of the Table
The title is sufficiently clear
concise and descriptive to be understood by intended audience
without reading the results section
This title can stand alone and be interpretable
lines of demarcation are used to set title
column headings data
and footnotes apart from one another
the column heading is subdivided into two or more categories
and subheading for each category is used
the column headings are brief
Short terms or abbreviations in the column headings
and subheadings are used
column headings at the top of the table
apply to the entire table
There cells horizontally or vertically are not merged
within a table
apart from when required in column headings
a series of superscript symbols are used to indicate
that further explanations are provided in the footnote
The order of information in the footnotes is
First
statistical and experimental data details
Then the definitions of abbreviations
At last explanations of symbols
All the explanations are written in one paragraph
without separate lines.
Now let’s look at the next example It is from British Medical Journal. The paper is Effectiveness of a childhood obesity prevention programme delivered through schools, targeting 6 and 7 year olds: cluster randomised controlled trial
It is from British medical journal
The paper is effectiveness of childhood obesity prevention program
delivered through schools targeting six and seven year olds
cluster randomized controlled trial
From this table we can see the following features
“Table 4“ is followed by a short vertical line
the title “adjusted differences for body mass index
zscore between control and intervention groups at first
second and third follow up ” goes above the Table
the title provided the sufficient information
the abbreviation BMI is defined in the title
lines of demarcation are used to set title
column data and footnotes apart from one another
a column heading is subdivided into two or more categories
and subheading is used for each category
a series of superscript symbols are used to indicate
that further explanations are provided in the footnote
In the footnotes further explanations are provided
to clarify experimental and statistical details in the table
Each explanation is provided with a separate line
Now let’ look at the last example from JAMA
The paper is Effect of Continuous Glucose Monitoring
on Hypoglycemia in Older Adults with Type1 Diabetes
From this table we can see the following features
"Table 2“ is followed by a period
the title “glycemic outcomes” goes above the Table
the title is brief and clear
lines of demarcation are used to set titles
column headings data and footnotes apart from one another
a column heading is subdivided into two or more categories
and subheading is used for each category
the primary comparison reads horizontally
Footnote is placed at the bottom of the table
sometimes the footnotes
can also be placed at the right side of the table
such as the following example
superscript letters a, b, c, d,e are used
to mark each footnote and each footnote in the table
has a corresponding note and vice versa
Note that JAMA Network journals report laboratory values
in conventional units
In the footnote
the conversion factor to SI units is provided
The order of information in footnotes
first the definitions of creations are provided
starting with “abbreviations” colin
Then the writer provided SI conversion
After that
the writer provided further explanations
to clarify experimental and statistical details in the table
Each explanation is provided with a separate line
Now let’s look at some exercises
exercise1
If you want to submit paper to the JAMA
which of the following tables is appropriate
From what we have learned today
we know A is the format for British Medical Journal
B is the format for JAMA
C is the format for Lancet
D is the format for New English Journal of Medicine
So B is the correct answer
Exercise 2
If you want to submit
the paper with the following table to the Lancet
how do you revise the table
According to what we learned
about the format of Lancet today
we get to know that the title should be
placed at the bottom of the table
the order of the information in the footnote
should be changed
and the separate lines are not needed
So we can revise it like this
This is the end of today’s lecture
thank you
