Now Let's summarize this chapter
As an important part of a research paper
a title should highlight the core content of the paper
it is an essential way to bring the article to potential readers' attention
especially in those cases
where the database
being searched does not include
the abstract of the article
The title has two main functions
First
To summarize the central idea of the paper
concisely and correctly
Being glancing
at the title
the reader will immediately know
what is mainly dealt with in the paper
Second
Facilitate the retrieval
During the process of paper retrieval
the title is always the first piece of information
the reader acquires
Generally speaking
there are three types of titles
Topic phrase titles
Message phrase titles
Message sentence Titles
Topic phrase titles are the most
commonly used type
It uses the
noun phrases to indicate what the paper is about
There are also two basic patterns of the titles
One is main titles with no subtitle
and the other is main titles with subtitle
A subtitle can be used
to indicate the study type or design
and it is a technique for putting an important word first
Some language tips for writing a good title
One
informative and complete
An informative and complete title
should include the sufficient and necessary information for reader to know
either what the research is about
or what the research has discovered
some key words or terms from the paper should be used
Second
Accurate and clear
Being accurate and clear means
you need to use accurate and clear words
to indicate the relationship
between variables and exact meaning of your research paper
Third
Brief and concise
Being Brief and concise means
we use the minimum words
to provide the sufficient information of the research paper
we can make titles concise are by omitting unnecessary words
Fourth
Appropriate word order
Paying attention to word order
in the title is important
because it can influence the reader’s interest in the paper
Generally
words at the beginning of the title make the most impact
Now let’s do some exercise
Please decide whether these titles indicate the topic or message
HIV-1 Neutralizing Antibodies Induced by Native-Like
Envelope Trimers
we can see it is a phrase title
the word “induced by” indicates the message of the paper
A Dose-Response Crossover Iodine Balance Study
to Determine Iodine Requirements in Early Infancy1,2
we can see it is a phrase title
the word “to Determine” indicates the topic and purpose of the paper
Measuring the Quality of Outpatient Treatment For Schizophrenia
we can see it is a phrase title
the word “Measuring” indicates the topic of the paper
Quantifying the Burden of Stillbirths Before 28 Weeks of Completed
Gestational Age in High-Income Countries
we can see it is a phrase title
the word “Quantifying” indicates the topic of the paper
A Bivalent Virus-Like Particle Based
Vaccine Induces A Balanced Antibody Response Against Both
Enterovirus 71 and Norovirus in Mice
we can see it is a sentence title
the word “induces” indicates the topic of the paper
Now Please revise the following titles according to the writing tips we have learned
A Systematic
Multinational Large-Scale Analysis on Comprehensive
Comparative Effectiveness
and Safety Of First-Line Antihypertensive Drug Classes
The target readers maybe more interested on the topic
of this study than the method
we can switch the emphasis
by placing the topic at the beginning
and putting the method as the subtitle
So this is a revised version
Comprehensive comparative effectiveness and safety of first-line
antihypertensive drug classes
a systematic
multinational large-scale analysis
Study on Unstable Angina and Non-ST Segment
Elevation Myocardial Infarction in Acute Coronary Syndrome
“a study on” can be omitted without changing the meaning of the title
So it can be revised as
Unstable angina and non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction
in acute coronary syndrome
Relationship between
Nerve growth factor
and neuronal apoptosis after spinal cord injury in rats
To make the title clearer
“Effect of” can be added to indicate the cause and effect relationship
between independent variable
“Nerve growth factor” and dependent variable neuronal apoptosis
So it can be revised as Effects of Nerve Growth Factor
on the Neuronal Apoptosis After Spinal Cord Injury in Rats
Treatment of Acute Hepatic Failure by Liver Transplantation
“Treatment of ” can be omitted without changing the meaning of the title
It can be revised as
Liver Transplantation for Acute Hepatic Failure
An Analysis of 38 Cases on Clinical Diagnosis of Primary Ureteral Carcinoma
“Clinical diagnosis of
primary ureteral carcinoma” is the most import part in this title
so it should be put in the beginning
It can be revised as
Clinical Diagnosis of Primary Ureteral Carcinoma
an Analysis of 38 Cases
Fifteen Artificial Joint Replacements Were Performed in Patients
Who Had Type II Diabetes
An Analysis of Fifteen Cases
In this title
we can see the title is not brief enough
“Fifteen” is repeated twice at the beginning
and in the subtitle
Since Fifteen is not what the writer wants to emphasize
fifteen at the beginning can be omitted
the verb “were performed” can be omitted without changing the meaning of the title
and the attributive clause
who had type II diabetes can be replace
by using the preposition “with type II diabetes”
It can be revised as
Artificial Joint Replacements in Patients with Type II Diabetes
An Analysis of Fifteen Cases
This is the end of chapter 6
