Part 5
Summary
After the title and abstract
the INTRODUCTION is the next thing your reviewer will read
so it's vital to begin strongly
The INTRODUCTION is your opportunity to show reviewers
why your research topic is worth reading about
and why your paper warrants their attention
1 Follow standard format of the Introduction
There are generally 2-5 paragraphs
most commonly 3 paragraphs
These paragraphs should include 3 moves
what is known
what is unknown and what is the hypothesis or aim or plan
2 Start broadly and then narrow down
In the first paragraph
briefly describe
the broad research area
and then narrow down to your particular focus
3 State the aims and importance clearly
Say what you want to achieve
and why your reviewer should be interested
in finding out whether you achieve it
4 Cite thoroughly but not excessively
Instead of simply saying that your topic is important
show why the topic is important
5 Clearly state your hypothesis
or research question or aim
A clear statement of the hypothesis or research question
or aim is an effective way of framing the research
6 Cite properly and adequately
The citations should be selective
and every source used must be cited
7 Keep Introduction short
Try to avoid an overly long introduction
A good target is no more than 400 words
covering 10% of the total word count
8 Select proper tenses
Three tenses are most commonly used
present, past simple and present perfect
9 Select specific action verbs
Research papers
often involve the description of processes and methodologies
which makes it even more important
for the specific action word to be used
10 Use signal adverbs or adverbial phrases
Use signal adverbs
or adverbial phrases at the beginnings of the sentences
that mark a shift between background
the unknown and the hypothesis
11 Incorporate a variety of sentences
Good writing incorporates a variety of sentences
particularly sentences of different lengths
12 Incorporate a variety of sentences
