Welcome to the online course

Interpreting: Theory and Practice

I’m your lecturer Catherine

In previous three lectures

we learned a lot about figures

In this lecture

we’ll have a simulation practice

that involves figures interpreting both in independent forms

and in texts between English and Chinese

You’re going to listen to them

write the figures down and convert them

into the target language as quickly as possible

by using the rules of conversion talked about previously

I’ll give you demonstrations

Now let’s start with independent figures

There are twenty of them

ten in English and ten in Chinese

First

Listen to English figures and take notes

Welcome back

Have you got all the figures?

These are my notes

Please look at them and check your own

Some of you might have noticed

that I wrote the numbers differently

from what you did

Next

I’ll pick out six typical ones and explain to you

how to write them in notes

The first number is 1.3 billion

You can write the number either in its original form

which is 1.3 billion

or in the form of the target language “13亿”

Because we have “billion” in English

so it’s easy for you to finish the conversion

during your listening

The second number is 738,567 in English

When we write down all the six numbers

we should quickly group the numbers in four

and separate each of them with a comma

because it’s the rule of reading numbers in Chinese

So the number is read as “七十三万八千五百六十七”

The next number is a fraction: 1/5

It’s a simple number

but we should remember there is a slash

between the numerator and the denominator

In addition

cardinal numbers are used for numerators

and ordinal numbers for denominators

when we read them

Then comes 10,043

This one is a bit different

The common mistake is to write it

as 1,043 in which a zero is missing

To avoid such errors

you should keep in mind that three numbers

form a group in English

When you hear the speaker say “ten thousand”

you should instantly be aware

that there must be three remaining numbers

Then find the group and add a comma

So the number is read as 1,0043

In English

“0” can be omitted in spoken English

when it is the only number on the left

of the decimal place

The number “0.23” can be read

either as “zero point two three” or “point two three”

The last number is 1,345,698,404 in which thousand

million and billion are included

To convert it into Chinese

you need to group every four numbers

and ultimately we get the number 13,4569,8404

Based on my explanation

I believe you’re clear about converting figures

Now

let’s try another ten Chinese figures

three hundred and sixty five

five one thousandth

eight point six nine

seventy point twelve percent

three billion six hundred ninety eight million

seven hundred thousand one hundred and eight

one million

three million six hundred

and fifty five thousand and ninety five

twenty three thousand one hundred

and twenty three point four three

a hundred and twenty three point two three percent

Forty five one thousandth

To sum up

two points deserve your attention in interpreting figures

First

distinguish between the rules of expressing figures

in English and Chinese

Second

finish the conversion as much as possible

while you are listening

Practices of independent figures

are the basic step of figures interpreting

When you no longer

have trouble with independent figures

it’s time to move to passage interpreting

Here are two passages for you

one in English and the other in Chinese

Both of them contain several figures

Let’s start with the English passage

Listen and take notes

These are my notes for your reference

But remember that my notes

may differ substantially from yours

As I mentioned in Unit 4

there are no single best answers to notes

because notes are largely invididualized

However

make sure that you got all the numbers correct

Now

please retell the source language

with the help of your notes

as well as your short-term memory

The employment rate for college graduates reached 77.8%

an increase of 1.2 percentage points

over the previous year

The number of rural workers totaled 253 million

an increase of 4.4% over the previous year

of whom 159 million worked in towns and cities

up 3.4%

If you can retell 80 to 90% of the source language

you can try to interpret this passage into Chinese

The following are my interpreting of this passage

China's GDP reached 47.2 trillion yuan

an increase of 9.2% over the previous year

government revenue was 10.37 trillion yuan

an increase of 24.8%

and the country's grain output

reached a record high of 0.57 trillion kilograms

A total of 12.21 million

new urban jobs were created

The per capita disposable income of urban residents

and the per capita net income of rural residents

rose in real terms by 8.4% and 14.1%

respectively

We’ve done much practice about figures in this lecture

In subsequent interpreting learning

we’ll encounter figures from time to time

The best way is to keep practicing

until you have no difficult with them

In next unit

we’ll learn some skills of general interpreting
