Hi everyone
It’s such a pleasure to see you again
After several weeks of hard work
we finally come to the last unit
For those who have been closely
following my steps
I give you my sincere congratulations
For those who are still lagging behind
I want to tell you that you
are approaching the final destination
if only you push yourself a little bit harder
With all those delicate skills and techniques mentioned
in this course previously
learners often find themselves at a loss
when they want to engage in interpreting training
A quite common phenomenon
is that they work so hard
but only to achieve little effect
It seems that all their energy and endeavor
do not pay off
Do you have the same doubt?
Ask yourself this question
do I have any effective means
to practice interpreting?
Well
most learners will probably shake their heads
The frequently asked questions include
Why am I not making any progress
though I’m working so hard?
Is one-way practice the only way
to strengthen interpreting ability?
How can I learn to express in idiomatic English?
Stay focused and get the answers in this unit
It is generally agreed that effective methods
play a critical part in learning
It is prevalent for learners to practice interpreting
just from the source language
to the target language
which perhaps will be repeated several times
depending on the difficulty level of the source language
However
such a process may not produce a favorable result
In interpreting training
there are two highly efficient ways called
“CECE” and “ECEC”
“C” stands for Chinese
and “E” stands for English
These two approaches differ
from conventional methods
in that they treat interpreting training
as a two-way activity instead of one-way
In other words
the information flows in dual-direction
which can only be achieved
through a good command of both languages
“CECE” and “ECEC”
help you gain an in-depth insight into the differences
between Chinese and English
The “ECEC” approach is applicable
when the source language is English
and it takes in three steps
First
listen to the target Chinese version
take notes and retell
Second
listen to the source English version
take notes and interpret into Chinese
Third
listen to the target Chinese version again
and interpret into English
Conversely
the “CECE” approach can be adopted
when the source language is Chinese
It also consists of three steps
First
listen to the target English version
take notes and retell
Second
listen to the source Chinese
take notes and interpret into English
Third
listen to English once again
and interpret into Chinese
Now
please follow me to explore
how the “ECEC” method works
Let’s start from the first step
Now you are prepared to get down to interpreting
let’s say the source language is president
Trump’s speech
do not start directly from English to Chinese
as most learners usually do
Instead
start from the target language
which is Chinese in our case
In most circumstances
the scripts of Chinese are provided for learners to check
Your job is to read the Chinese scripts
and record with your phone or other devices
Of course
you can also find someone else to record it for you
Then listen to Chinese
take notes and retell it
Listen to the Chinese scripts more than once
if you can’t retell all the critical information
at a time
Do the listening until
you can handle the retelling with ease
If you’re strong in short-term memory
it’s better not to rely on notes
During the first step
you get familiar with the Chinese content
and also can learn some good expressions
in Chinese
Many learners underestimate the importance
of listening to and retelling Chinese
thinking it unnecessary to invest much time
in their native language
This is wrong
I bet you’ve seen people around you
who are unable to organize
their thoughts coherently
even in their native language
and one of the reasons is that
they seldom take time to sharpen Chinese
Trust me
You’ll find the step is worthy of your attention
The second step
is to listen to the source audio
namely Trump’s speech
take notes and interpret it into Chinese
This is where most learners have difficulty
Despite your previous understanding
of its Chinese version
you’ll probably find many problems
still exist in your interpreting
They’re not merely
about the choice of words or expressions
but more often about sentence structure
which creates the biggest difference
between the two languages
In listening to the English source material
concentrate on how ideas are expressed
and sentences are organized
The last step
perhaps the most important
is to listen to the Chinese audio once again
take notes and interpret it into English
Try to use the expressions
and sentence structures you learned
while listening to English
as much as possible
It is a way to check
whether you have truly understood the usage
of the good expressions and sentence structures
appeared in the source language
Many learners opt to skip the last step
taking it as unnecessary
As a matter of fact
the last step is what really matters
Some say
I can interpret Chinese into English
without taking the last step
Yes
you might
But the problem is your interpreting
may be full of Chinglish
because you can’t shake off the language
custom of Chinese
and simply interpret word for word
To eliminate Chinglish
you need to give the three steps the same priority
By following the three steps
you’ll gradually be able to store those expressions
and sentence structures in your brain
which will ultimately contribute to a bigger
and more profound reservoir of knowledge
The “CECE” approach will not be elaborated here
but you can safely copy the steps of “ECEC”
Don’t forget to shift the language order
In next two lectures
we’ll have some simulation practices
of “ECEC” and “CECE”
