about the basics of interpreting

particularly the classification

because different people

may not be interested in the same field

In this lecture

you’ll get to know the classification of interpreting

from which you may find the interest

you want to focus on

Interpreting involves primarily two types

consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting

Consecutive interpreting is usually abbreviated to “CI”

During CI

the speaker speaks for a short time

and pauses for the interpreter to interpret

Then the speaker proceeds

pauses and gives time

to the interpreter to output the target language

Consecutive interpreting is commonly applied

in press conferences

foreign meetings

business negotiations

outdoor activities etc

Simultaneous interpreting is usually abbreviated to "SI"

This format allows for the interpreter

to speak at the same time and rate

as the speaker does

Simultaneous Interpreting is a highly specialized style

of interpreting which requires extensive training

skill and experience

Also necessary is a mastery of the source

and target languages

as well as the subject matter

and topics being interpreted

Simultaneous Interpreting is the best option

for bi-lingual and multi-lingual events

when there will be an expectation

of uninterrupted speech

such as key note addresses

training

seminars etc.

we can further classify interpreting

based on space

contexts and themes

If we classify interpreting according to space

we have live interpreting and remote interpreting

Live interpreting occurs when the speaker

the listener and the interpreter are all present

On the contrary

if the speaker

the listener and the interpreter

are not in the same place

the process is called remote interpreting

such as telephone interpreting

remote video interpreting

Basically

interpreting can be further divided into six types

when contexts and themes are taken into consideration

They are conference interpreting

diplomatic interpreting

business interpreting

media interpreting

community interpreting

guide interpreting

medical interpreting and escort interpreting

All of the six types

take place in either the form of consecutive or simultaneous

based on their features

needs of clients etc.

However as learners

it’s important to bear in mind

that consecutive and simultaneous interpreting

are the most usual classification
