In this lecture
we’ll practice the “CECE” method
Before getting down to practice
let’s review the steps of “CECE”
First
listen to the target English audio
take notes
and retell
Pay attention to those useful
expressions and structures
that you don’t know how to use
Second
listen to the source Chinese audio
take notes and interpret it into English
Try to make your target version
as close as to the suggested answer
Third
listen to the English audio again
take notes and interpret it into Chinese
The purpose is to improve your Chinese expressions
These steps are not fixed
You can adjust them according
to your personal situation
If you have difficulty in retelling the target
English audio in the first step
listen to it a few more times to make sure
you can do it before moving to the next step
Always remember
the ultimate goal of this practice
is to enhance your language proficiency
rather than hastily finish the steps
In your practice
of course
you have to record the target English version
by yourself
or as I mentioned last time
ask a friend to do it for you
But make sure you do not read too slow
slow or too fast
Try to read at the same rate
as the source language speaker does
The Chinese audio is also chosen
from the third-level CATTI test
It’s about cooperation
between China and the west
The target English audio
is read and recorded by me
To make it easier for you
I split both the source and the target audio
into two segments
so that you won’t feel overwhelmed
In this lecture
we only practice with the first segment
leaving the rest part for you to do by yourself
Now let’s start from the first step
Listen to the target English audio
take notes and retell
It’s not difficult
right?
There are four sentences in this audio
three of which are simple ones
Look at your notes and try retelling
making it as close as possible
to the original English version
If you missed some points
please listen to it once again
and concentrate on what slipped your memory
Now

Keep in mind the expressions like “two-way”
“handle well” and “a marked imbalance”
and learn to use them
when converting Chinese to English
Then comes the second step

I believe all of you did a great job
of retaining the source language information
because the language used
is as simple as in English
But is it also easy to convert the Chinese into English?
Give it a try and find out where the problems lie
For the first three sentences
you can adopt an approach
we talked about in unit 6
Can you name it?
Yes syntactic linearity
But why?
Because the sentence structures used
are the same in both Chinese and English
So we can interpret the three sentences into
Cooperation and exchanges should be two-way
We believe that we should handle well the relationship
between competition and cooperation
Cooperation can be more advantageous than competition
But what to do with the last sentence?
The original Chinese goes like this
然而
我们注意到中国对海外的报道
与西方媒体对中国的报道
两者之间存在明显的失衡
In this sentence
it is the judgment
namely “there is a marked imbalance”
that delivers the most information
and calls for attention
In doing interpreting
it’s essential to be sensitive
to the respective structural features
of the two languages
Native English speakers are used
to stating the result first
with the background information goes after it
which forms a pronounced contrast with Chinese
Hence
the supporting background information
should give way to the judgment
to make the target version comply
with the custom of English
Here’s the final English version of this sentence
However
as we have noticed
there is a marked imbalance
between China's report on foreign countries
and the reports on China by western media
Now let’s move to the final step

Some might be all thumbs
which sends a clear signal
that it is absolutely essential
to maintain a balance
between the two languages
Invest a certain amount of time each day
in reading literary pieces in English and Chinese
It nurtures your mind with great thoughts
and helps expand the diversity of your own
which in turn determines
how well you can make use of your language
