Welcome to the second lecture of unit 7

In this lecture

we’ll practice the “ECEC” training method

The English source material

comes from level three CATTI interpreting test

so that you can check the difficulty level and decide

whether you want to take this test or not

The target Chinese audio is read and recorded by me

In your practice

you’d better choose materials from CAATI

press conferences or speeches

the contents of which are updated

and the suggested target versions are available too

In this way

you don’t have to bother

searching for the target language everywhere

or face the embarrassment

that your interpreted version is somehow awkward

Now

let’s get started

Do you still remember the first step

of the “ECEC” method?

Yes

the first thing is to listen to the Chinese audio

take notes and retell

Of course

if you’re confident in your short-term memory

take it as your first option

This audio is about the elimination of poverty

Please be focused

Have you grasped all the critical information?

Now

please retell the Chinese version

with the aid of your notes

How do you feel?

These are my sample notes

Compare your retelling with mine

It’s unnecessary to make your retelling

exactly the same as mine

Minor differences do not bring negative effects

What you do need to pay attention to

is the structure and style

that make a language idiomatic

If you lost too much information

repeat the first step

until you cover all the key points

What’s the next step?

Yes

listen to the source language audio

take notes and interpret

Here we go

Now do the interpreting based on your notes

Try to make your target language

suitable for Chinese listeners

which means

you have to reorganize the sentence structure

by complying with the language customs

If necessary

you can also find a partner

to listen to your interpreting and point out

where he/she thinks a problem lies

I believe you have noted

some of the differences in structure

But how should you adjust your target language?

Now

please join me to interpret the English into Chinese

Let’s see how English and Chinese differ

in this example

and think what we should do to reorganize the target version

In the source language

the word “world” is the subject

and the prepositional phrase “in some areas”

is placed at the end of the sentence

as supplementary information

In Chinese

“in some areas” should take the place of “world”

to be the subject

because it fits the way Chinese people speak

Also

in the source language

the attributive clause

“that are economically left behind”

is put behind “places and people”

In Chinese

we prefer to put a short attributive clause

clause before a noun

Now let’ move to the last step

Listen to the Chinese audio once again

take notes and interpret

Convert the target Chinese into English

based on your memory of the source English material

Forget your Chinglish and try to use the idiomatic

expressions and structures

that are used in English

Let’s do it together

There are several good expressions and structures

in the source language that deserve your attention

including “facing a serious poverty problem”

“refocus our attention and energy on”

“keep in mind”

“none are more committed

to doing something than somebody”

and “get rid of poverty”

Make your interpreting as close as possible

to the source language

Practice the third step

until you can apply these expressions

without any hesitation

just like they’re an inherent part of you

The “ECEC” method can work miracles

so long as you use it to sharpen your interpreting skills

on a regular basis

In the next lecture

we’ll practice the “CECE” method

The combination of the two ways

is a mighty sword

that helps you yield the best result

with half the effort
