Hello everyone
Welcome back
I’m your lecturer Catherine
Do you still remember what we discussed in last lecture?
In last lecture
we introduced two types of memory
long-term memory and short-term memory
among which
short-term memory is the primary form of memory
an interpreter uses
From lecture two to lecture four
three skills
will be introduced to help you enhance memory
And today
we’ll learn the first skill
which is called source language recitation
As the name indicates
the skill involves repeating of the source language
Let’s first look at a demo
We’ll hear a Chinese sentence
and an English sentence respectively
After that
I’ll repeat what I hear
This is what I heard
专家一致认为
黄浦江两岸的冰水区悬置方案具有独特的优势
它巧妙地扣住了
城市——让生活更美好
这个主题
Then comes the English sentence
Please join me to repeat this sentence
Let’s repeat
Oral communication skills
do not rely only on vocabulary
Many British teachers have found
that Chinese students
attach great importance to vocabulary
But at the same time
they comment that students’ usage of words
is inappropriate in their communication
You see
this is how recitation works
You just repeat what you hear
with the original language as exactly as possible
It’s relatively easy when sentences are not long
but when it comes to long and complex sentences
or even paragraphs
it can be really tough
In order not to upset
yourself at the beginning
the following tips are recommended for you
First
it’s recommended to start
with your native language recitation first
In your case it’s Chinese
Second
when you feel you are comfortable
with recitation in your native language
shift to target language
For Chinese learners
it’s far more difficult for them
to repeat English than Chinese
Therefore
after you get used to repeating
it’s suggested that you spend more time
and energy doing recitation in English
It’s a good way to train your ears
and make them more sensitive
to English information
Third
choose a single sentence to begin with
instead of several sentences
or even a short paragraph
Then
gradually increase the length of sentences
The longer the sentences
the more difficult it is to repeat
When you are able to remember and repeat
four or five sentences at a time
it means your memory capacity
has been strengthened and your brain
is ready to store more information than before
Fourth
at the outset
choose easy materials instead of difficult ones
For instance
you can use materials that are related to your life
like study selecting courses
socialize with people around you etc
In this way
you’ll quickly build confidence and want to keep going
Fifth
it’s also a good way
to do interactive recitation with your peers
It goes like this
one student repeats the source language
the other student takes down the errors
and missing information
so as to improve accuracy
Through long-time practice of interactive recitation
you’ll be able to accumulate narrative knowledge
in your long-term memory
and improve efficiency of memory
Finally
always remember
a good memory is not something to be achieved
within a short period of time
It takes patience and perseverance
The above six tips will help you get started
with source language recitation
With the tips in mind
let’s now have a practice
Listen to the audio and try to repeat what you hear
If you find it hard to retain all the information
please try a few more times
You may also take down simple notes to help you
Have you got it?
Here are the scripts
I’m pleased to welcome you
my distinguished guests to Miami
a beautiful city which is also my hometown
for the first meeting of US-China Cooperation Forum
Source language recitation
is a basic yet effective way to start training memory
If you’ve never tried repeating source language
or you’re troubled by your weakening memory
now it’s time to start
Choose some easy materials and practice them
for 15 minutes every day
Soon
you’ll be amazed to find your memory improved
The earlier you start
the sooner you’ll benefit
We’ve talked a lot in this lecture
Let’s stop here and meet next time
Hope to see you soon
