Hello everyone
Welcome to the online course
Interpreting: Theory and Practice
I’m your lecturer Catherine
Today we come to Unit 6
which is themed with interpreting delivery
We start this unit with a lecture on public speaking skills
You may wonder how interpreting
is related to public speaking
The reason is that interpreting is actually
a kind of public speaking
because an interpreting activity
occurs in a public scenario
Everything an interpreter does aims to deliver
his/her messages and build a connection with listeners
As interpreters
we face many situations
we meet a variety of people with different backgrounds
and understanding of the language exchange
Communication facilitated by interpreters is a dynamic process
Since it occurs in a group context
the opportunity of a connection
is automatically established
However
the poor performance of an interpreter
can break that connection
and affect the interpreting result
as the following video shows
This is a typical example
We can see from the video
that the speaker was enthusiastic and animated
He spoke with a clear voice and strong body language
and was keen to involve his audience
Quite the opposite
the interpreter gave a poor delivery
She’s nervous
lacked confidence and spoke in a low voice
Those who could not hear left
and those who could hear lost interest
I believe
you’ll also find such interpreting delivery boring
if you were one of the audiences
That’s why we say a good interpreter
is supposed to do equally well in public speaking too
As an interpreting learner
have you ever given thought
to your public speaking skills?
Have you ever gone through any frustrations
in public speaking?
How do you evaluate your public speaking?
Whatever your circumstance is
you can find ways to make a change
and become a skilled public speaker
Join us and discover how to boost your inner abilities
When it comes to public speaking
nearly all people feel some physiological reactions
like pounding hearts and trembling hands
Do not associate these feelings with the sense
that you will perform poorly or make a fool of yourself
Some nerves are good
The best way to overcome anxiety is to prepare
prepare
and prepare some more
Among all public speaking skills
confidence
eye contact and a strong voice are essential
If you are looking for ways to boost your confidence
then remember
proper planning and preparation for a probable event
can help you in maintaining your facade
of confidence much better
People generally lose their confidence
when they face sudden challenges
or potentially difficult circumstances in life
Plan ahead and give yourself the necessary time
to rehearse and prepare
so that you can maintain your level of confidence
An important way to increase your confidence
is by practising your mannerisms in front of a mirror
so that you come across as a confident individual
at all times
The second important point
is to look your audience members in the eye
Focus on someone and make eye contact
for a sentence or two
Doing this shows your audience
that you are speaking to the audience
not at the audience
Making eye contact can also help you stay calm
Focusing on one person at a time
and treating it like a conversation
instead of speaking to a large group
might feel more comfortable to you
Some people were born with a low voice
But too often
a low voice indicates shyness and diffidence
If you want to be an interpreter
you have to practice
and make sure you have a physically strong voice
A suggested way
is to record your voice and listen to it
You can read whatever material at hand
like your notes
a speech
an article etc
Listen to your recording and assess your voice
You can also compare your voice
with that of some excellent interpreters
and identify how you differ from them
in terms of voice
Keep practicing and a strong voice
is sure to wait you at the end of the day
The above three public speaking skills
are indispensable in doing interpreting
If you’re struggling to improve your
public speaking skills as an interpreter
then start from those three
Trust me
you can greatly benefit
from speech making skills and strategies
