个人陈述视频+讲稿+课件

Hi, there, I am Judy; welcome to the video lesson for personal statement.

A personal statement is a supplementary statement when you apply for a master's degree or position in a foreign country. The purpose of personal statement is mainly to introduce your characteristics, research fields and interests to the university you applied for, which is used to prove that you have the research ability to complete the subject.

This class focuses on preparation, structure, and template analysis for personal statement.

Now, we start from the preparation. First, selling point, this stresses your special experiences and abilities. Second, achievement here focuses on your achievement in the field. Third, ability, you need to talk about your ability in leadership, communication or analysis. Four, knowledge mainly refers to the sources of your knowledge, such as you learn them from lectures, reading, seminars or work experiences. Fivewhen it comes to interest, the most important thing is to prove that your interest is suitable for this major or position. Finally, priority section focuses on why you are competitive and you need to give explanation on it.

After the preparation, let’s move on to the structure of personal statement. In the opening part, you need to introduce your interest, then talk about your goal clearly. In the main body part, you should break them into two paragraphs; group them into academic background and interesting experiences, which makes your essay easy to follow. Last but not least, in the conclusion part, you need to give a summary of future expectation in the study or research field.

Now, keep your eyes on 4 dos and 4 don’ts.

4 dos

1. Write directly and in a straightforward manner that tells your purpose.

2. Evaluate and explain the value and meaning of your experience, such as what you learned in this field, your future goals, and your career planes.

3. Be brief and concise. Do not write long-winded confusing paragraphs that leave room for misinterpretation.

4. Write well and correctly. Or you will get lower grades.

Here comes 4 don’ts1. Don’t copy, which will fail you eventually.  2. Don’t make a catalog of achievements, which has already shown in your other materials. 3. Don’t lecture the reader, it makes your statement quite boring. 4. Don’t include some controversial problems.

Here is a template for you.

At the beginning, you need a catchy opening: state your purpose and interest in the specific programdegree or position. For instance:

Analysis: you will find that the opening is brief and concise, which gives the main idea directly, so that the recruiter can easily get the point.

Main body would mainly relate to your academic background and experiences, especially some relative work or study experiences.

For example

Analysis:

In order to convince the recruiter that you are suitable for the major or the position, this means that you should express a well-round preparation for it. Long and complex sentences structures are usually used to make your personal experiences more specific, because the more specific your personal experience is, the more real it looks like.

In the closing paragraphyou need to make a forward-looking future plan, stating your willingness to make contributions and efforts to the industrymeanwhileyou need to reconfirm your commitment to the field.

For example:

Analysis:

As a summaryyou should mention your future planning, including career choice and life planning as specific as possible to stress your determination.

Now let's review the content of this lesson. We focus on the preparation before writing a personal statement, which include selling point, achievement, ability, knowledge source, interest and priority. Then we moved on to the structure of the personal statement: the introduction, main body and conclusion. Finally, we offer a template for you to follow.

All in all, it's important to point out that you’d better not copy any template, but you can follow the structure and try to write your own unique style of personal statement. And remember: victory belongs to the most persevering.

So much for this lesson. Thank you for your attention. Until next time…
