Hi, I am Judy; welcome to the video lessons for the criteria of IELTS.

This section mainly emphasizes the following three aspects: 1.The writing overview, 2.The types criteria and strategy of task1. 3. The types, criteria and strategy of task2.

Let’s start from overview

There are two types of writing in the IELTS, G stands for general training modulewhile A stands for academic module. This lesson mainly focuses on A-type.

The writing of type A needs to complete two essay-writings in 1 hour: task1 and task2. Task1 requires a description of a graph, which needs to describe the data, trends and comparisons in the graph. You need to finish the task1 in 20 minutes to write at least 150 words

Task2 is a kind of argumentation, which usually takes 40 minutes to write at least 250 words about social, educational, scientific and technological topics.

Now we start from of task1

There are several question types like : Line graph Bar chartPie chartTableDiagram-comparing and Diagram-process. And I highlight the first four types: Line graph Bar chartPie chart and Table, because they are often appeared in task1, they have one thing in common--that they all show numbers. Diagram-comparing mainly emphasizes geographical changes, like the comparison of different periods of location. Such asWhether a supermarket is better to open in the downtown or the suburb. Diagram-process is a general description of the working principle, production process and so on.

 Here are some useful words when you describe table: numbers, dates, length, and times. When you describe a pie chart, the words like: percentage, proportion are used very often. About the line graphs, we usually choose trend, change, peak, bottom, beginning point, ending point, etc. Bar chart needs to use contrast, trend, grouping, etc.       

Here are the criteria of task1

1. Task Achievement, the task1 is to describe a figure, some kind of a graph, chart, diagram that you see. Your task is to describe what you see.

2. Coherence and Cohesion. This part requires clear and distinct writing contexts and strong logic between sentences and paragraphs. 

3. Lexical Resource. The vocabulary used in the writing process requires precision and flexibility.

4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy. This requirement reflects your basic grammar knowledge and sentence structure in the writing test, requiring you to vary sentence patterns on the basis of accurate expression.

The corresponding strategy of task1 is to give an introduction through paraphrase the question, the main body mainly depends on whether you can describe the key factors clearly and accurately by reading the information in the picture, and finally make an overview of the content, then you can complete all the requirements.

Task2 is an argumentation that we're most familiar with. Here are 3 question types of task2.

Discussion needs to give one or two points of view, you should list some reasons and experiences to support your opinions, for example, agree or disagree, to what extent, what do you think, discuss both sides of the argument, and give your own opinion. The question of discussion can be divided into the following four types:

        1. Do you agree or disagree?

        2. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

        3. What’s your opinion?

        4. Try to discuss both sides and give your own opinion?

Analysis of advantages and disadvantages, which mainly about a certain argument, this type of questions are generally divided into the following three types:

        1. What are the advantages and disadvantages?

        2. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

        3. Is that a positive or negative trend?

The last type is the report, which generally can be divided into the following aspects of cause, effect, problem and solution. The questions are as follows:

        What are the causes/effects/problems/solutions?

Knowing the problem pattern of task2, we need to make clear its criteria, the criteria is similar to that of task1, which has three points:

TF: Task Fulfillment. You’d better response to all the questions and focus on the idea, content and structure of the essay.

CC: Coherence and cohesion. This section focuses on organization, detail development, and the context coherence.

SS: Vocabulary and Sentence Structure. This point stresses on the words accuracy and sentence structure, which means that you need to pay more attention on language accuracy and word variability

According to the above several requirements, the corresponding strategy of task2 goes like this

First of all, when you start your task2, you should grasp the writing topicfocus on the core topic, in accordance with the requirements of the theme clear, logical expression of your thoughts.

2Evidence. With a well-organized and logically-written writing process, you need to know that the evidences should revolve around the theme, and support your ideas.

3Coherence and cohesion. Cohesion of discussion is directly related to whether there is a clear logical relationship between the contexts.

Now, It’s time for us to review this whole lesson, in the writing overview part, we focus on the types of IELTS: A and G Module, but we just focused on A module. And we also talked about what to write in the IELTS writing. In the second and third part, we talked about each type and the similar criteria of task1 and task2, meanwhile we offered the strategies for each type separately.
