Hi, I am Judy; welcome to the video lessons for ielts’ writing—task2.

When it comes to the ielts’ task2, we will talk about 3 objects in this lessontask requirement, structure of the task2, and a sample of task2.

Let’s start from the first objective-- task requirement.

Well, come back to the task criteria. Actually, the examiner scores your essay according to 4 criteriatask responsecoherence and cohesionvocabulary and grammar. Try to focus on the first 3 aspects, because grammar needs a long way to go, while you can improve much faster on the other 3. So answering the question, in a well-organized way, with good ideas and good vocabulary, I do think that it is much easy to work on those three things.

So, we need to break the task into 3parts. We knew that we need to write about 250words, so we break them down into paragraphs and sentences. Generally speaking, we divide them into four paragraphs, about 14 sentences. I will put 1-2 sentences in introduction, in two main paragraphs, 3-5sentences each, and in conclusion, I will use 1-2sentences at most.

At the beginning, we will use about 10 minutes for planning, 5 minutes in the introduction, 10 minutes in each main paragraphs, another 5minutes in conclusion.

The structure of the task2 can be divided into 3parts: introduction, main body and conclusion.

The introduction usually introduces the topic, give a general answer, and write a short but effective introduction. If you want a high score; you’d better focus your attention on your main body part. In the main body part, you need to focus on the planning, ideas and vocabulary, which need to be expressed in a rational and logical way. And in the conclusion, you could repeat, summarize or paraphrase the introduction part to show variety.

All in all, ideas plus vocabulary makes your essay stand out.

Let’s see how to write a short but effective introduction: You’d better give the topic and answer the question by paraphrasing the question.

How to write a main paragraph? I think we work on 2 types of main body pattern: the first type is the type of list, which usually goes like: Firstly, secondly, finally pattern. The second type is type of explanation, which often follows: Idea, explain, example pattern. We can use the first type when we have more than one idea, this pattern is perfect for advantages, disadvantages, problems and solutions. On the other hand, when you have one idea, one reason, and one opinion, it’s perfect to use the second type.

When you plan an idea by using type1, you can follow this way: first, you give the topic sentence, and then use firstly, explain more, or add example. Followed by secondly, thirdly, etc. the first type could be shown in our later sample.

 While idea, explain, example type needs to give the idea, and explain, sometimes give some examples to support the ideas.

Remember: Linking words, like and, but, then, etc. does not help your vocabulary score, Examiners want to see “topic vocabulary”.

About conclusion part, there are 2 easy rules to follow: never write anything new, try to use 1-2sentences to repeat or summarize the introduction to show variety, usually, we start this part from “in conclusion”.

Let’s have a look at this sample and analyze the main point:

The question is:

Firstly, we need to give a task response, find the topic and answer the question.

We can paraphrase the question into the topic+ solution:

You can see I choose the behavior of school pupils take the place of student behavior, and I use some parts of the world instead of many countries, getting worse rather than severe problems.

In the body part, with more than one problem, one solution, firstly, secondly, thirdly pattern is perfect for this topic, in main body paragraph 1, you need to give the causes of bad student behavior. For example:


After I mentioned the problems, my suggested solutions should also be given in the second main body part.


In the end, we need to summarize the problems and steps for a conclusion.


Last but not least, idea +vocabulary make you outstanding. So, vocabulary needs to be focused on, for example, we have used the following words and expressions as topic vocabulary.
